Wine Glasses

Get started to give a fresh look on all those old and ordinary wine glasses. Add on to your home decor by self-made handcrafted glasses. Follow these simple tips for a creative craft that can be cherished for long.

Materials required

  • Wine glasses or any transparent glasses
  • Glass paints
  • Tube of black glass relief paint
  • Motif
  • Fine paintbrushes
  • Palette for missing colours
  • Scissors
  • Alcohol and cotton or rag cloth for cleaning up

Procedure

  • Wash the wine glasses with soap and water and rinse it well. Make sure you get rid of that lingering dirty smell. Allow it to dry completely.
  • Trace the motif on any desired shape. If necessary enlarge the motif on a photocopier.
  • Get a waterproofing from the store and apply it on the glass before you begin so that the paint will adhere for longer time.
  • Mix colour dye with the paint for a smoother surface. Make sure not to use excess as it may change the colour.
  • To paint designs on the glasses you may use stencils. The easiest way would be to place a picture of your choice on the inside of the glass and apply colours on the other side to match the photo. Or place the glass over one of the motifs, close one eye and outline the image using the black paint directly on the glass
  • If this seems hard then just draw graphics like little hearts, daisies, or any free hand designs for that simple and classy look.
  • Paint the glass in as many shades you wish, but see to that they correlate to your theme and other colours. Do not apply different colours simultaneously; allow each colour to dry before using the next. Remember to clean your brush before changing the colour.
  • Paint it in smooth strokes to avoid bubble as it creates bumpy surface after the glass has dried.
  • Wet cotton with alcohol and wipe away any mistakes on the glass the very second. See to that the alcohol doesn’t run into your design as it may run or smudge into your creativity. If you dislike any of your designs wash it in warm water or wipe it completely with rubbing alcohol for a crystal clear look and try it again.
  • Sprinkle glitter on the wet paint if desired. You can even add beads or sequins using tweezers directly as the wet paint acts like glue.
  • After the glass is totally dry etch into the painted glass with a closed pair of scissors. You can use small scrolls or zigzag patterns on the rim of the glass for a varied look.
  • Drying time for water based paints is 2-3 days and non water based paints is 8 hours.

These glasses should be used only for decorative purposes. Do not brush vigorously or wash it in dishwasher. Clean it with damp cloth or in mild running water.
