In the earlier times hats were used to protect the head from external elements and were mostly made of animal skin. Traditionally women were expected to keep their heads covered by kerchiefs, hoods or veils. But it was only by the end of the 16th century that women’s hats were being made but the styles were being copied from the men’s hat. It was only in the late seventeenth century that women’s hats began to have their own distinctive style and not influenced by men’s hat. As like their male counterparts hats became a prestige symbol among the women. A hat would signify the social status of a lady. In contemporary history some of the women who have sported hats regularly are Queen Elizabeth II, Jackie Kennedy, and the late Princess Diana.

Hats are one of the best accessories for women. They tend to complement the garment worn by the ladies and as like the dresses the hats too are seasonal. Hats made of heavy fur or animal hair is the talk among the ladies during harsh winters. These hats keep the head warm and help in proper blood circulation. They have throughout history kept the ladies warm long before the central heating system was discovered. In the moderate climatic regions woolen hats have had their popularity among the women.

The hats are very ideal for the rainy season as they dry very fast.

The hats are an important accessory to women’s dressing and since the time they have been worn they have symbolized many things like the socio-economic background of the women and her sense of style.
