Tips For Choosing Right Shoes For Children

Friday, January 4th, 2008

kids footwear Unlike many adults, kids don’t really enjoy shopping for shoes. But at the rate they outgrow them, trying shoes on is absolutely essential for growing feet. Here are some tips that will help you be certain that your children’s shoes fit properly, and remove some of the nightmare elements of shopping for kids’ shoes.

When to Buy New Shoes for Your Child

Unless your child complains that they are uncomfortable, you may not know when it’s time for a new pair of shoes. It’s a good idea to periodically check your children’s shoes to make sure what they’re wearing is still working for them.

Look for particularly worn areas, or stressed seams. If the sides are bulging or wearing out more quickly than the rest of the shoe, then they may not be wide enough. Toes that bend upwards are also a sign of shoes that don’t fit properly, and worn out toes or heels can also mean it’s time for a new pair of shoes.

Shopping Tips for Children’s Shoes

  • Shoe shopping should always be done later in the afternoon or evening, since feet swell over the course of the day.
  • If you’re child is particularly not into shoe shopping, look for a store that specializes in children’s footwear, as the staff should be well-versed in how to deal with the reluctant shoe shopper.
  • While there are so many cute and trendy shoes available for kids, unless it’s for a very special occasion, it’s best to avoid overspending as children outgrow shoes so quickly and new shoe occasions are seemingly always right around the corner.

Choosing Shoes for Children

  • Children’s shoes should have laces, velcro or some other fastening system. As a general rule, avoid backless or slip-on shoes for kids.
  • Look for shoes made from breathable materials, such such as canvas or leather. In addition to being more durable, they will help to keep the child’s foot cooler and dryer, helping to prevent blisters, discomfort, and smelly shoes.
  • While they may look cute, always avoid heels on children’s shoes. Not only is it difficult for kids to walk in heels, they are particularly bad for proper foot development. When it comes to children’s shoes, stick with flats and even soles.
  • Look for a pattern or textured sole, as this will provide traction and help prevent your child from easily slipping on slick surfaces.
  • Soles should be sturdy and thick enough to protect the feet from pain and injury, but the sole also needs to be flexible too so that it will bend with the foot.
  • Once you’ve found shoes that fit and are appropriately designed for a child’s feet, allow your children some input as to which shoes they prefer. It’s bound to make for a better shopping experience if they get to choose a color or design they like from shoes that fit well and are appropriate for growing feet.

How Many Pairs Of Shoes Are Considered Too Many?

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

trendy shoesRemember the key to a good shoe wardrobe and a good wardrobe period is QUALITY, not QUANTITY. As women, we wear the number of shoes in our closet as a badge of honor, yet, we don’t WEAR most of them. you only wear like 10, maybe 15, of your 50 pairs of shoes and the others are long forgotten. I say sell them off, so you can fully enjoy the ones you actually wear.

To be honest, you really only NEED five pairs of shoes:

  • Pair of Tennis Shoes/sneakers
  • Pair of Black pumps
  • Pair of Sandals (with a strap that strategically covers your “problem” toe)
  • Pair of Black or Brown boots (midcalf to knee high that you could wear in the snow or rain and still look fabulous)
  • Pair of Flats(or shoe with a slight heel if flats are uncomfortable)

Obviously most of us aren’t going to have just 5 pairs of shoes in our closet.. so here’s some other shoes you should have as “shoe wardrobe stretchers”:

  • Pair of Sexy Shoes (i.e. stilettos, peep toe, red patent leather, whatever)
  • Pair of Wellies or Snow Boots (cause let’s face, sometimes it’s just too cold (or rainy) to be cute
  • Pair of cheap Trendy Shoes (bright neon, extra pointed, jelly, you get the picture)
  • Second Pair of Boots (especially if you live in the Midwest, northeast or northwest)
  • Pair of Brown Heels
  • Pair of Trendy Sneakers (so you can look cute while you shop)
  • Pair (or two) of Flip-flops ( they’re just so practical)

How To Buy Best Walking Shoes

walking shoes

Do you want to buy a new pair of walking shoes? Follow these shopping tips to find the perfect match for your feet.

Shop at the end of the day that’s when your feet are largest. If you walk in the morning, you can always make small adjustments in size with socks.

Wear your walking socks. Some styles are really thick, and you may need to go half a size larger with your shoes to accommodate them

Get your feet measured as you get older, your feet tend to flatten out. Also, your feet swell when you walk, and they need room as they go through the walking motion. All of these factors may affect your shoe size. So be kind to your feet: Measure them, and be sure to buy big-enough shoes. Footwear that’s too small can cause all kinds of problems. A few years ago, a study by the American Podiatric Medical Association revealed that most foot problems among women result from wearing too-small shoes.

When you try on shoes, make sure that there’s plenty of room. You need at least a finger’s width beyond the end of your longest toe (usually the big toe). And remember to measure when you’re standing up rather than sitting down.

Spend some time in the shoes you are trying on. Walk around the store. If you’re in a mall, ask if you can take a few laps around the inside corridors. The shoes should feel great.
