Ruby Walsh - The King of the Jumps

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009
by Sck

 by Johnny Feltcher

Some say he is the best and some say he’s not, but whatever he is, Ruby Walsh is certainly one of the greatest jump jockeys of all time and is likely to be one of the greatest for a few years to come yet.

He is the son of Irish trainer and former amateur jockey, Ted Walsh, and burst on to the National Hunt scene in the UK back in 1998, when as an 18 year old he rode the winner of the Champion Bumper, Alexander Banquet, at the Cheltenham Festival. Prior to that, he had emulated his father by winning the Irish amateur jockey championship twice in succession.

Walsh did not find any further success at the Cheltenham Festival until 2002, but he made national headlines in both the UK and Ireland when he rode Papillon to victory in the 2000 Grand National, a horse trained by his father. Ruby followed that up with a victory on Commanche Court in the Irish equivalent just a few weeks later.

By now, Ruby Walsh had become a big name on the National Hunt scene on both sides of the Irish Sea and the offers of good rides and permanent stable positions were abundant and the winners just flowed in and his reputation soared.

In the 2004/5 season, Walsh rode the winners of three of the four major Grand Nationals. He rode Numbersixvalverde in the Irish, Silver Birch in the Welsh and Hedgehunter in the Aintree Grand National. In that same season he was beaten by a short head when riding Cornish Rebel in the Scottish National which deprived him of the unique statistic of having ridden all four ‘National’ winners in one season.

Walsh had however already won the Scottish National a couple of years earlier on Take Control and he is still the only jockey riding currently that has won all four.

This year at the Cheltenham Festival, Ruby Walsh broke the record for the number of wins achieved. He had seven winners, including the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Kauto Star, the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Master Minded and the World Hurdle on Big Bucks. He was also a close second in the Champion Hurdle on Celestial Halo. He has now ridden 24 winners at the most prestigious of all racing festivals.

It is true of course that Walsh does get the choice rides of both England’s and Ireland’s top stables. In the UK he rides for Champion trainer, Paul Nicholls and in Ireland he has first pick of the Irish Champion trainer, Willie Mullins horses. It is an enviable position but one that is richly deserved.

Many believe that he is still not as good as champion jockey, Tony McCoy, but others would argue different. Whether he is or not, Ruby Walsh is the King of quality and he rarely gets his rides wrong. With over 1400 winners to date and aged only 30, Ruby Walsh has a lot more to come and is most definitely the man to follow in the big races.

His next big engagement will be at the forthcoming Punchestown Festival at the end of April where once again he is favourite to finish top jockey, before riding at the Galway Festival in July

4 Fantastic Winter Outdoor Exercises

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009
by Sck

by Tom Parker

Many people avoid exercise during the winter. Some do not like the cold weather. Others are afraid that they will slip and fall if they spend too much time on the icy paths. However, with a little creativity you can come up with plenty of outdoor exercises that can be performed during the winter months.

If you are a person that normally avoids exercise over winter, this is the article for you. Below I will be discussing four fantastic winter outdoor exercise ideas.

1) CLEARING YOUR DRIVE:- This may not be your idea of fun but if it snows your drive is going to need clearing. One of the benefits of clearing your drive is that it will help you get a pretty intensive workout. One hour of shovelling can burn over 400 calories and it can save you a bit of cash as you do not have to pay anyone else to do it.

ICE SKATING:- Many local councils convert their town’s lake into a temporary ice rink during the winter months. Plus, many cities set up a temporary outdoor ice rink in the city center over winter.

If you are lucky enough to be in one of the towns or cities that offer this facility then why not take full advantage? Ice skating is great fun whether you go alone, go with friends or go with family. It is also a fantastic exercise that gives your leg muscles a good workout and can burn over 300 calories an hour.

3) SLEDDING:- Sledding is another fun winter exercise that can be done on your own or with family and friends. Plus, you only need three things to start sledding; a hill, a sledge and some snow. You should be able to find a hill in your local park whilst a sledge can be purchased from most local stores during winter.

Then you are good to go. Whilst sledding is very enjoyable it also burns a fair few calories which you will notice after the first few times of lugging the sledge up the hill.

4) SNOWBALL FIGHTS:- Starting a snowball fight is great fun and does not require any additional equipment. Not only is it a great option if you have a competitive streak but it involves lots of sprinting, ducking and diving which burns a fair few calories. An intense snowball fight can go through over 300 calories in an hour.

I hope this article has shown you that the winter weather does not have to stop you exercising. Although you cannot do the same exercises that you did over summer there are plenty of opportunities to experiment with new, exciting exercises such as ice skating and sledding. So if it starts to snow do not run for cover. Get out there and try one of the above suggestions.

The Liverpool Shirt - One Hundred and Seventeen Years of Glory

 by Patrick Attlee

Liverpool Football Club are an English football team. They are the most successful of all the English professional teams having won the First Division title an astonishing eighteen times not to mention their peerless European Cup record of five victories. Liverpool play all their home games at the famous Anfield stadium where they have been based since their formation in 1892.

Liverpool were not the original occupiers of Anfield. Indeed it was their fierce Merseyside rivals, Everton, who played there before Liverpool was even incorporated. Due to a dispute between Everton management and the Anfield leaseholder, Everton quit Anfield and moved to Goodison Park where they have remained ever since. Everton F.C.

And Athletic Grounds was founded by John Houlding, the then leaseholder of Anfield. His idea being to install the new team at the ground recently vacated by Everton. However the Football Association would not allow two teams to use the same name so the team became Liverpool FC.

Managers have come and gone over the years but the most notable boss was the legendary Bill Shankly whose statue stands outside Anfield today. Currently managed by Rafael Benitez, the team has had some recent success most notably winning the Champions League and FA Cups. The big prize of the Premiership title has yet to be realised however.

When the team replaced Everton at Anfield, the Liverpool shirt was similar to the Everton strip of the same time. The shirt was blue and white, bisected vertically. The strip was completed with blue shorts and black socks.

The Liverpool shirt was changed to all-red in 1894 to be different to the blue of Everton. White Shorts completed the kit. The socks have been swapped from red, to black, to white before coming full-circle back to red. In the mid 1960s, the now familiar all red strip was adopted for home games.

The Liverpool shirt used for away games are traditionally yellow with yellow shorts or white shirts with black shorts. As with most clubs there has been some deviation from the traditional as new schemes are tried. In 1987 an all grey kits was introduced which was used for four years.

During the 1990s there were several changes to the away strip including green shirts with white socks, navy and gold, yellow, black and grey and even ecru. In recent times the club has alternated between the yellow and white away shirts with the grey shirt being re-introduced for the 2008-2009 season.

A third kit that is mostly used for Champions League away games is a turquoise shirt with black shorts.

The Liverpool F.C. crest takes its inspiration from the city of Liverpool’s liver bird. The Liver Bird sits inside a shield with a representation of the Shankly Gates above. The gates bear the club’s anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. The flames flanking the gates are recent additions in memory of those who died in the Hillsborough disaster. They mimic the eternal flame that burns outside Anfield.

The Liverpool shirt was the first to bear the team sponsor’s logo when Hitatchi sponsored the team in 1979. Sponsor companies have included Candy, Crown Paints and Carlsberg.

Hopefully this article has provided an interesting insight into the Liverpool shirt and how it has changed over the last one hundred and seventeen years.

Koozies For Sports Lovers

Koozies For Sports Lovers   While selecting a gift for your friend or colleague you must not forget to choose something which suits the attitude, culture and taste of the person. You can definitely select something keeping in mind the hobby of the person. If your colleague or friend is male you can be quite sure that he will be a sports fan.

A sport accessory or something with which he can enjoy watching the sport on TV or on the ground can be a wonderful gift for him. The NFL can koozie can be a great gift for him. It is a wonderful gift for a fan of Super bowl. It will be a nice gesture and will show that you care for him if you gift him this koozie.

This beer koozie has the symbol of the team you support on one side of it and has a plate on the other side of the koozie where there is a place where your friend can write his initials and whatever else he wishes to. This will not only give him joy, but come to his use also.

The koozie will help to keep his beer cold for long periods of time when he will be out to watch any match. The beer koozie prevents the temperature of his hand from having any negative effect on his beer can.

The koozie is usually made of foam or neoprene which is used for making wet shirts. This material keeps the beer insulated from the outside temperature and keeps the beer cold for over forty minutes. Thus he will not have to run to get chilled beers very often during the course of the game.

The koozie will not only help to keep his drink cold but also it will be a good holder for carrying the can to the fields. The koozie if used as a holder prevents your hands from getting wet. The beer cans can become wet due to condensation and thus become slippery. It becomes difficult to grip the cans if you hold it in your hand.

The beer koozie helps you to keep you to hold the beer. The beer koozie takes good care of his hand as well as the drink, but you must also tell him to take care of the koozie too. The bottom end of the koozie must not be allowed to remain open.

The koozie should be kept on a coaster to prevent the outside air from coming in contact with his drink. You can also go for custom koozies when you want to buy one for your friend. You can attach your picture on the koozie and write your initials or messages on the koozie.

This would be a constant remembrance to your friend whenever he wants to have a beer. You can search online for the exact design which you want on the koozie. You have a large online gallery from where you choose the exact graphic and then edit it if necessary.
