We all know that the sun rays in summer cause damage to the skin that can speed up aging and possibly trigger cancer. But it is essential that you protect your hair from the scorching sun rays as well. Sun damage to the hair can manifest as faded hair color, brittle and dry hair. The UV-rays can cause permanent damage to the outside covering of the hair which is the cuticle and it can penetrate into the center of the hair, which is the cortex and do all sorts of damage. Hence you need to take special care of your hair during this season.
- Use sun protection filters that will protect the hair from UV-rays damage. Hanging out in the sun without protection for your hair and scalp is the worst thing you can do. Use leave-in hair products with SPF protection.
- Prevent static electricity in your hair when washing by applying a conditioner that adds moisture and shine to your hair. Alternatively, apply a “leave-in” conditioner after towel drying hair. Leave in hair conditioners are designed to penetrate or settle down into the layer of the cuticle thus protecting your hair from any damage.
- If you normally blow dry and use hot curling tools every day, try and give your hair a break during the summer months. Consider letting your hair air dry or take time out from curling. Hair braided when wet will air dry into beautiful waves.
- When the summer heat is hottest, wear your hair up in a knot, bun or braids. Wash your hair with a deep-cleansing shampoo and dab conditioner on the ends and frizziest parts of your hair. Pin it up or wrap it in plastic and sleep on it. Using this method will restore absent moisture to the ends your hair.
- Be religious about your trims. Make sure you have the ends trimmed every 6-8 weeks during the summer months. When your ends are fizzy, it’s a sure sign that they are either damaged, split, or both.
- For summer months, be careful to use hair products that are as all-natural as possible. Avoid any products that contain alcohol or formaldehyde since they can be excessively drying to the hair. Read the labels properly before buying any product.
- Leave-in heat protection spray and conditioner has Octyl Methyoxycinnamate listed in the contents. This is a known sunscreen ingredient. If you are serious about sun protection for your hair, make sure the products you use list an actual SPF.

Bleaching is a process done to make hair lighter. Choosing to bleach hair is a daring decision has once hair are bleached there is no way you can go back to the original hair color. At the maximum what you can do is, dye your hair again to the color similar of your original hair
Preparing the mixture
- Generally instructions are written on the kit. Read them carefully.
- To prepare the mixture start with adding little hydrogen peroxide (provided in the kit) to the powder bleach.
- Stir it well. Then add some more peroxide. Make sure that you do not add lot of it. This little by little mixing is essential for good result.
- Make sure that it is neither too runny nor too thick.
- Tightly close the bleach powder after use. It should not come in contact with air or else it will become less influential.
Applying the bleach
First prepare yourself for the bleaching. Wear your plastic gloves and tie a towel on your neck that you don’t mind ruining. Now you are all set for the bleaching.
Take the supplied brush in your hand. Dip it in the solution and then start from the back of your head. Then from the back of the head move the brush to the top. With the help of the brush evenly distribute the mixture. Work as quickly as possible so that you can distribute it evenly on your head before it gets tougher. Once you have applied the solution put on the plastic cap on your head.
Do make sure that you keep the solution on your head for appropriate time. Keeping it for a short time won’t give you result and keeping it for more than required time will burn your hair and may result into bre akage and hair loss.
After you rinse all the bleach off your hair use a mild shampoo to ensure that no chemicals are left on hair. After the bleaching process moisturizing hair is must since bleaching dries hair. If you are not satisfied by the bleaching result do not re- bleach the hair same day. Wait for at least 2-3 days or take help from experts.
People generally choose bleaching hair so that they can get the best result when they dye their hair. However, if proper care is not taken while bleaching, then one might have to search for ‘best hair growth’ treatment.

Summer is vastly approach and with summer comes the harsh rays of the sun. While most of us remember to protect our skin with sunscreen, often we forget to pay attention to our hair. The sun can damage hair’s cuticles, leaving your hair dry, brittle and frizzy. It can also make hair’s color fade and if you have fine or chemical-treated hair, the sun’s harsh rays can be extremely worse.
To prevent the summer sun from damaging your hair, check out these great tips:
In the Sun
- Look for an SPF spray made for hair. If you can’t find an SPF or you’re in a pinch, you can use a sunscreen made for you skin. Apply ½ cup water with ½ teaspoon 25 SPF sunscreen. Mist on damp hair before styling. You can also apply undiluted sunscreen to the center part of your hair. If the sunscreen is too messy, try a lip blam with the highest SPF you can find. Be sure to wash the sunscreen from your hair using a deep-cleansing shampoo after you get home.
- Look for styling products that have SPF built into them. Manufacturers are now providing consumers with SPF protection via hairsprays, styling gels, mousses, etc.
- If you do choose to use a styling product with SPF protection, keep in mind that most contain alcohol, which can dry your hair out faster than the sun.
- If you can’t find SPF for your hair, you can try using coconut, jojoba, sunflower or olive oil in your hair. To use, simply apply the oil to your hair before going out in the sun. The heat from the sun will help to penetrate the oil into your hair shaft. You should note however, while the oil will condition your hair and repair it before it becomes dry and brittle, it won’t protect from all sun damage.
- Wear a hat or bandana if you’re going to be out in the sun. Choose a hat that has a wide brim all the way around. This will not only protect your scalp, it will also protect your skin. For bandana, wrap them starting at your hairline and leave the pointed end covering the rest of your hair. Look for fabric that is made from a very tight weave and is less likely to allow light to pass through it.
- Put your hair into a french twist or bun when the summer heat is at it’s hottest. Putting your hair up will protect your scalp and the hair that is closest to your scalp from the sun.
- Out of the Sun
- Treat your hair to a deep conditioner at least once a week to help tame hair frizzies and put back the moisturizer that the hot sun can take away. Look for products that say, “replenish” or alcohol –free since these are designed to add moisture to the hair.
- Wrap your hair in a plastic cap overnight to restore moisture lost from the sun and prevent frizzies.
- If you color or bleach your hair and you’re a blonde or a brunette, have your colorist go half a shade darker to prevent the sun from fading the color. If you’re a redhead, try a color-locking treatment to prevent fading.
- Finally, if you really want to prevent sun damage to hair, avoid the sunlight during the peak sun hours. This is when the sun is at it’s hottest. If it’s impossible to do so, wear a hat or SPF and try to stay in the shade where it is possible.
